One of the things that was striking about the evening at the ball game was that when they announced me as receiving the award with giant pictures of me on the photocam, I received a prolonged standing ovation from 45,000 people in the stands. Yet, the far right as exemplified by the newspaper The Washington Examiner put on YouTube the headline "Fauci booed at Mariners game. They put the microphone next to about five or six people out of 45,000 who were booing and saying I should go to jail and they completely ignored the 45,000 people that gave me a prolonged standing ovation.    Jan. 28, 2019 - Big day at White House. Major discussions at Deputies on how to handle the 200 US Citizens (diplomats and families and others) who are being airevaculted form Wuhan. They are on a plane from China to Alaska to California. Concern about whethernor not to quarantine them for 14 days when we did not and do not quarantine Chinese who pass screening on entry. Marty Cetron had argued that the American were very recently in the "hot zone" whereas the chines who are coming in now are not really coming from Wuhan since Wuhan has been shut down by the Chinese. Also, political concern of what it looks like to quarantine or "imprision" US citizen versus what happens if we let them in and they start infecting people. Finally decide to do a sft verion of bringin them in to a military airbase - the March Air reserve Base in Riverside County. CA, and consider them all not a low risk. They are either medium or high risk based on their exposure. They all will be tested (nasal swab PCR) and detained at the base for up to 72 hours until the tests come back and then released. Cases = 17,205 with 361 deaths; 26 countries have 180 international cases and within that there are 20 human to human transmission transmissions with no sustained transmission yet. Complicated issue with border crossings of Chinese at Canada and Mexico. Many come over, but screening capabilities are not like we have at airport. Travis AFB, Miramar, Lackland AFB are landing destinations for US Citizens coming from Wuhan so that we can implememnt institutional quarantines and medical care if needed. Spoke with George Gao tonight in China. George is the Director General of the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He confirmed that infected people can be asymptomatic and that asymptomatic people can transmit. This is important since the recent NEJM paper that said that a Chinese woman who went from Shanghai to Germany and infected a business associate while she was asymptomatic was in fact mildly are hearing the symptomatic and so the NEJM paper is incorrect. However, the fact is still true. Also, George was very sensitive and understandably defensive since he was the one who said early on that there was no human to human transmission and that the original 27 cases in the wet market reported on December 31, 2019 were animal to human when actually human to human transmission was occurring weeks before. The Wuhan health officials did not tell him this and he thus gave out false information. This lapse likely allowed the outbreak to take hold since Wuhan went about their business with 40,000 pot luck festivals without social distancing.
