May 18, 2021 - Global USA 2nd day in a row that numbers are way down - 19,500: We are having a serious problem here in that the Public Affairs people at HHS are refusing to allow Francis to put on the NIH website an explanation about what we did with the grant associated with the Wuhan laboratory. The HHS people are misguided thinking that by explaining the grant as well as what gain of function really means we will be calling attention to 'public 800,000/584,300 the issue. They completely fail to realize that there is already intense attention paid to this issue and the legitimate press including the Washington Post and the Atlantic are asking legitimate questions and wanting to know why we are not responding. We are going to put more pressure on HHS to allow us to be able to develop a statement for the NIH website as well as provide talking points and Qs and As. Francis, Larry and I along with others on the NIH team discussed with the HHS team led by the new ASPA Sarah Lovenheim and Ian Sams among others. They were very reluctant to have us put a statement on the NIH director's website concerning the gain of function issue. This is completely ridiculous since if we do not respond to the many misleading statements that are being made then it will look like we're covering things up. The HHS people do not seem to understand that. They also are reluctant for us to directly answer letters of inquiry from the GOP members of Congress who are probing around the Wuhan issue. They are a new group and very inexperienced but they can really mess things up if we don't hold our ground. We finally got them to agree to put Francis's statement on the NIH webpage; however, they're still not allowing us to proactively put out the talking points and will only allow us to do that in specific answer to questions that come in. In another amazing aspect of the discussion they were actually claiming that we should not answer the letters that we get from Congress. More later on this struggle. One of the real problems is that people are conflating whether or not we approved gain of function research for Wuhan and the possibility that the Chinese created SARS-C0V-2 in the laboratory. Whether or not one agrees as to the conduct of gain of function research, when you look at the bat viruses that was studied under the grant and compare the genetic sequences with SARS- CoV-2 it becomes clear that SARS-C0V-2 could not have come from the bat viruses idio; )10,000/585,000 associated with the grant that was funded. Doctor Biden specifically asked that I accompany her. After we toured the clinic, Doctor Biden and I gave a joint press briefing. They are saying that she bypassed all the appropriate procedures to rush the vaccines through approval. There is a Washington Post reporter (Annie Linskey) who is trying to write a story that the CDC is taking on a much broader role of making policy and giving guidelines when in the past they have been more of an advisory group. The White House and HHS want me to disabuse the reporter of this story since as a matter of fact it was only in the last administration with Trump that the CDC was diminished to just being advisory. In every other administration with which I have been involved, the CDC has always made policy and guidelines . The outlier is what happened during the Trump administration. I will try to set the record straight in discussing with a Reporter. There is really an organizer effort to discredit me. May 22, 2021 - Global - 165,800,000/3,400,000; USA - 32,900,000/586,300 00,000/586,800 Joan Baez - I had a most extraordinary and memorable evening last night at the Kennedy Center. Joan Baez invited me to be her escort on the occasion of her receiving the Kennedy Center medallion for lifetime performance as a performing artist. Other awardees included Dick Van Dyke, Garth Brooks, Debbie Allen, and Midori Goto. Finally, I got to meet her in person after the year-long building up of our friendship via texts and phone calls. She is an absolutely amazing, warm an endearing person, and our friendship was cemented last night as it became clear that we really were, as I said, "meant for each other ". I got to meet her family including her son Gabe and her granddaughter Jasmine, who is an absolutely beautiful 17 year old girl, aspiring songwriter who will be entering college in Miami in September. Also present was Irwin Redlener who is the one who introduced me to Joan about a year ago. I was somewhat taken aback by the attention that was paid to me by all the celebrities who were there who are gushing to have their picture taken with me and to tell me how much they were appreciative of what I had been doing. A typical example was Garth Brooks's wife Trisha Yearwood who was just gushing to meet me. The same was true for many other people including co-award winner Debbie Allen and Broadway legend Chita Rivera, as well as Dick Van Dyke, another award winner. I got to escort Joan up to the stage to receive her award and I sat with her as she waited to go on the stage. after the awards ceremony we all went out to the outside deck of the Kennedy Center and had champagne and snacks. Interesting to see if they fixate on the lab. Escape theory. I had a very interesting and helpful conversation today with Christian Andersen of Scripps Research Institute. He was very emphatic that the work that was done at the Wu Han Institute in Association with our grant was not gain of function . In addition he confirmed that if you match the chimeric viruses that were made in the context of the NIH grant in Wuhan, they are not even close sequence wise to the SARS-CoV-2. Christian will be writing a letter together with some data on this topic; however, I feel much better now that he is in total support of what I have been saying.
