August 4, 2020 - Global - 18,000,000/688; USA - 4,700,000/155,000 Amazing Day - We were supposed to have a routine TF meeting today. We were waiting in the Sit Room for a 3:00 PM start and the VP was late at 3:15 PM. Marc Short then came in and said that the POTUS wanted some of us ogo to the Oval Office. We we got there, the entire senior staff was there (everyone). The VP sat the following around the Resolute Desk - me, Deb, Redfield, Giroir, Azar. The POTUS then started eyeing and throwing around the Fuck word: "What the fuck are you people doing? Deb you are saying that the pandemic is now in the rural areas. First the cities, now the rural areas. Where is it now. I am saying we have it under control and you say it is everywhere. Tony, you are always contradicting me. Giroir, you say HC does not work (he said this on SOTU on Sunday). I took it and many good doctors swear by it.The whs fucking message. You need to be positive". Then he started raving that we are seeing more cases only because we are doing more testing. The other countries look good because thery are not testing. At that point, Kellyanne Conway took over and made the point that we can say what we feel is correct, but if it contradicts the pOTUS, they need to hear about it in the Oval or Sit Rooms and not hear about it for the first time on TV. Everyone remained silent. At that point I gifures enough is enough. I said: "Okay Mr. president. We are now in the Oval office and so you need to hear it diretly from me. Increased testing does not cause cases. When you increase testing you will of cours pick up asynptomatics whm you might otherwise not notice. However, when you have increased percent positives and increased hospitalization, and increased deaths, that means that there are truly more cases. He then changed the subject and started talking about the fact that deaths are down. After I broke the ice, then Deb, Redfield, and Giroir chipped in. All in all it was a manifestation that he is desparate and still does not understand the pandemic. Very interesting encounter. After that we went to the Doctors Huddle with Brad Smith and Adam Boehler to talk about tesing and schools. More later. PRESS: ,750,000/156,000. Donald J. He was his typical arrogant self and rejected RCTs as being flawed and stuck with the observational studies. He maintained: "I am wrong, no one is harmed, if you are wrong, thousands of people die". He denies that HC can have any deleterious effects. His partner on the call was Mark Hatfill (Yikes!) He admits that I am probably being misquoted, but the press is pitting me against the POTUS. They are trying to drive a wedge between us. My interview with CNN this AM was terrific, and when I saw that it was Mark who was calling I thought that he was calling to tell me that the CNN interview was great. Apparently, I had said yesterday that the virus would not be "eradicated", which is true (only smallpox). This is against what the POTUS said. I explained this to Mark and he seemed to understand that I was saying that it could not be eradicated, but I emphasized that it could be controlled. I suggested that he watch the CNN interview. He stated that the POTUS has a great deal of affection for me and he does not want to see a rift. He said he would watch CNN New Day and get back to me. I may be off TV for a while. Call from Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) asking about a few things. Is it a good idea to widely test for antibodies in PA to determine penetrance of infection? I told him yes. Also, questions about use of saliva POC tests. Good conversation. Discussion with Don Milton and Kimberly Prather on aerosols. OWS Weekly Call - All 6 companies now have advanced purchase agreements. Also, Pfizer still not giving any information even though they have adv. Purchase agreement. This is unacceptable and they need to be blasted in my memoir. Also, we are averaging 800 enrollments/day in the Moderna trial: 2020-08-07 OWS board briefing Vx & Call from Larry Horowitz (works with Nancy Pelosi) (should have described above). He had warned me a few days ago about Meadows trying to pressure Hahn and Marks to grant UA (or even BLA) prematurely to vaccines (likely AZ) in time for the election. I called Peter Marks a couple of days ago (together with Collins and Lane) and explained that we would back him if he holds the line. He called the AZ package "a hot mess' and definitely not in shape for an EUA 900,000/160,200. Plasma drive on Times Square Did Fireside Chat (virtual) at Brown University with Ashish Jha (new Dean at Brown School of Public Health) - PRESS: Face Book Live - Brown Fireside Chat (see above) August 8,2020 - Global - 19,200,000/716,000; USA - 4,900,000/160,200. POTUS acting even more erratically. Keeps insisting that increased case numbers are due only to increased testing, ignoring the increases in percent positive, hospitalizations and deaths (>1000/day). Inconsistent message to me whether they want me on TV. David Muir (ABC World News Tonight) requested me and we accepted and thought that it was cleared and then silence. Same for NBC Morning News with Savannah Guthrie. And so, I decided to call Alyssa Farah and straighten things out. She was her Confirmed Cases [Thousancs) a0 rd ¢ oe. ts Sn ty er ip New Daily Confirmed COVID-19 Cases in the U.S. --_ A] ag @. ty rd a ia, Sa, te e020 Day eee Day Mowing Avarage ae ay usual wonderful self when I explained that I needed to know where I stood with the WH and being on TV. She said that she would want me on every day and every night. However, the POTUS keeps saying that the Doctors are contradicting him and he is very impulsive and so when he sees or hears about a contradiction he blows up and says either Birx should not be on TV or Fauci should not be on TV. Comms people obey and then after a couple of days, they know that he calms down and even forgets and they then get me and Deb back on the air. Alyssa also said that Kayleigh McEnany reminds him that I have an 80% approval rating and it is not a good idea to keep me off TV. They want me on TV, but they have to play to POTUS and Mark Meadows impulsive and mercurial behavior. Interesting call. The coordinator of the White House coronavirus taskforce built her reputation fighting Aids but is she compromising it by indulging the president's whims? Dr Deborah Birx speaks during a meeting in the Oval Office with Trump. Photograph: Rex/Shutterstock Tom McCarthy @TeeMcSee Published on Sun 9 Aug 2020 05.00 EDT Months of frustration with Donald Trump's denial of the coronavirus crisis in the United States boiled over last week when the Democratic House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, publicly attacked a top member of Trump's coronavirus team, Dr Deborah Birx, for standing by the US president despite his record of lies and misinformation about the virus. Her position contrasts sharply with Dr Anthony Fauci, her former supervisor and current scientific peer on the White House coronavirus taskforce, who has clashed more frequently with Trump - but has if anything risen in the public estimation for doing so. The question for Birx is whether, after the current health emergency is past, she will be remembered as a Fauci-like figure who was able to work with Trump without becoming personally compromised - or as something else. I have been saying consistent that we should have as a default position our attempt/intention to open schools because of the psychological effects on children and in some areas, the dependence on schools for breakfast and lunch. Also, the potential deleterious downstream effects on working parents.
