Tom feels that we cannot depend upon the pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Pfizer to really provide doses of vaccine for the rest of the world at a reasonable price. Tom is going to present this proposition to Jeff Zients tonight. May 13, 2021 - Global USA • My conversation with Rochelle the night before the hearing must have worked. She just called me to tell me that she has made a major change in the CDC recommendations. 700,000/58 1,600 's from CDC: 600,000/582,300 She will take my advice and change the guidelines to read that a vaccinated person can go without a mask whether or not they are indoors or outdoors. This is a major change and I'm very pleased that she listened to me. The radical right-wing maniacs who blamed me for the rigidity of the CDC recommendations will probably not realize at all that it was me that triggered this change. • Had a productive meeting with David Marchick and his team from the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to determine how they may help to use their financing capability to provide vaccine doses to low and middle income countries. We discussed the multiple ways that this can be done ranging from financing transfer a technology two actually buying doses from companies to distribute to poorer countries. Also want to call besides Francis Collins and I were the teams from DFC and USAID. Also there was John Mascola and Cliff Lane. • Things continue to heat up regarding the innuendoes about our being responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic because of our grant to EcoHealth. Amazing!!! May 16, 2021 - Global - USA Numbers still coming down: Kate McKinnon played me again last night on "Saturday Night Live" in the context of the new CDC guidelines (see above). The CDC (Rochelle) got slammed on all the Sunday Shows for the abruptness of the announcement without planning for it or alerting people. People are confused as to what to do in certain settings such as businesses, shops, etc. I tried to clarify this on Sunday TV shows (see below). • Chris and I (with the detail) went for our Sunday walk on the Mall as opposed to the Canal. As expected, the press are trying to make something out of this that it may not be. They are suggesting that there was a rift between Rochelle and Anne and Nancy, and that is why Ann and Nancy are leaving. This is almost certainly not the case since both and Nancy have good reasons to want to leave. Both of them have been there for decades and clearly and clearly Anne wants to retire. May 18, 2021 - Global USA 2nd day in a row that numbers are way down - 19,500: We are having a serious problem here in that the Public Affairs people at HHS are refusing to allow Francis to put on the NIH website an explanation about what we did with the grant associated with the Wuhan laboratory. The HHS people are misguided thinking that by explaining the grant as well as what gain of function really means we will be calling attention to 'public 800,000/584,300 the issue. They completely fail to realize that there is already intense attention paid to this issue and the legitimate press including the Washington Post and the Atlantic are asking legitimate questions and wanting to know why we are not responding. We are going to put more pressure on HHS to allow us to be able to develop a statement for the NIH website as well as provide talking points and Qs and As. It is clear that the far right has stirred this up enough that now the legitimate press is beginning to ask questions. • Received this evening at the home (Villa Firenze) of the Italian Ambassador to the USA (Armando Varricchio) the Cavaliere di Gran Croce Ordino al Merito della Repubblica Italiana - Knight Grand Cross of Order of Merit of the Italian Republic conferred (in absentia) by Italian President Sergio Matarella We have a long and difficult conversation with the HHS people over the phone last night. Francis, Larry and I along with others on the NIH team discussed with the HHS team led by the new ASPA Sarah Lovenheim and Ian Sams among others. They were very reluctant to have us put a statement on the NIH director's website concerning the gain of function issue. This is completely ridiculous since if we do not respond to the many misleading statements that are being made then it will look like we're covering things up. The HHS people do not seem to understand that. They also are reluctant for us to directly answer letters of inquiry from the GOP members of Congress who are probing around the Wuhan issue. They are a new group and very inexperienced but they can really mess things up if we don't hold our ground. We finally got them to agree to put Francis's statement on the NIH webpage; however, they're still not allowing us to proactively put out the talking points and will only allow us to do that in specific answer to questions that come in. In another amazing aspect of the discussion they were actually claiming that we should not answer the letters that we get from Congress. More later on this struggle.
