As described last week, acknowledging the potential for so-called "rebound" COVID positivity observed in a small percentage of patients treated with PAXLOVID, the President increased his testing cadence, both to protect people around him and to assure early detection of any return of viral replication. After testing negative on Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning, Thursday moming and Friday morning, the President tested positive late Saturday morning, by antigen testing. This in fact represents "rebound" positivity. The President has experienced no reemergence of symptoms, and continues to feel quite well. This being the case, there is no reason to reinitiate treatment at this time, but we will obviously continue close observation. However, given his positive antigen test, he will reinitiate strict isolation procedures. As I've stated previously, the President continues to be very specifically conscientious to protect any of the Executive Residence, White House, Secret Service and other staff whose duties require any (albeit socially distanced) proximity to him. The President continues to feel well. Given his rebound positivity which we reported yesterday, we continued daily monitoring. This morning, unsurprisingly, his SARS-CoV-2 antigen testing remained positive, The President will continue his strict isolation measures as previously described. She is coming back from a trip to Uganda and Kenya. She thanked me profusely for sticking up for the CDC's decision about allocation of vaccines for monkey pox. Got a call from Jen Ashton of ABC expressing concern about something that I have been almost obsessing about today and most recently. That is the fact that the public may be taking monkeypox too lightly assuming that it will stay confined to the population of men who have sex with men. In addition, we are doing nothing proactively to encourage people to cancel such events as "Southern Decadence" and Black gay pride galas. We are starting to see cases of spillover into non men who have sex with men populations. Also, there is so much that we do not know about the Natural History of this disease and with the potential is to spread beyond MSM. I will have to talk to people at HHS and the White House that we cannot under play this outbreak. Call from Francis Collins, Acting Science Advisor to POTUS regarding NIH Director Choice - Charles Sawyer at MSKCC. Francis wants me to talk to him about the possibility of his being considered for the job of NIH director. It is essentially a recruiting call that Francis wants me to have with Charles.
