President Obama was hilarious as was comedian Joel McHale. Great evening.

May 10. 2014 - Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall (National Security Staff, White House and Special Assistant to the President, Coordinator for Defense Policy, Countering WMD, and Arms Control had met me at a Wayne and Catherine Reynolds function some time ago and took the initiative to invite Chris and me for dinner at her home at 4920 Indian Lane, N.W. her husband Jeff is a neurosurgeon in Bay Area near SF. He is on faculty at USCF. Children (Richard and William go to STA and heard my recent lecture there). Also at dinner was Al Hunt (Bloomberg News - wife Judy Woodruff could not attend - was giving Commencement Address at Alleghany College). Also present was Diana Farrell (recently Deputy Director, National Economic Council at White House and currently CEO of Kinsey. Inc.). Very pleasant and fun evening.

   May 14, 2014 - Yesterday was 2nd imported case of MERS-CoV from Saudi Arabia - a health worker at a Saudi hospital. Went from Ryaad to London to Boston to Atlanta to Orlando. Went to University of Pennsylvania to give the 12th Annual Neal Nathan son Lecture on "Ending the HIV/AIDS Pandemic: From Scientific Advances to Public Health Implementation". Spent whole day meeting with people many old friends - George Shaw, Beatrice Hahn, Larry Jameson. Megan had just decided last week to go to Penn, having also been accepted to Cornell, Columbia, Michigan, Hopkins, among others. Penn p [people are excited about Megan coming there. Had dinner at great restaurant (Bukkadan) in Philly before taking 9:10 PM Amtrak back to DC Did radio interview on new Guidelines for PrEP with CBS Radio in Men's room of the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia while I was waiting for the 9:10 PM train back to DC.

   May 15, 2014 - More MERS cases. Did CNN with Jake Tapper at 4:30 PM on the issuance by CDC of Level 2 alert for travelers to mid-East and airport alerts to pilots to report people with fevers and illness on mid-east flights. HHS now becoming more flexible in not giving us grief about being on TV for issues that they inappropriately think are CDC topics. CNN specifically said they wanted me and NOT CDC.

   May 16, 2014 - Did Al Jazeera TV on recent CDC guidelines for PrEP. I am becoming "the darling" of Al Jazeera. Producers really like my style and they keep coming to me.

   May 19, 2014 - MSNBC wants me this AM. Return of the "problem". CDC complaining to HHS that I am on TV for MERS-CoV even though the producers are specifically asking for me. They do not want me talking about "their issue". Amazing!! Typical situation where HHS says no to me, MSNBC cannot contact CDC and arrange in time and so now nobody from HHS is on TV and the slot goes to a health official from Illinois. The communications people from HHS are truly idiots to listen to CDC and back them. Courtney Billet blows HHS (Bill Hall, Sye Tait, Ira ?) away with several emails telling them how ridiculous this approach is. CDC is totally paranoid. I really wonder if Tom Frieden knows about this or if it is just the Communications people. Also did AP TV today for wide distribution to networks. Also, White House very interested in Antimicrobial Resistance and they are putting together a White paper through NSS, PCAST, OSTP. We are obviously playing role in its being drawn up

   May 20, 2014 - Travelled to Los Angeles to receive the "Heroes in the Struggle" award from the Black AIDS Institute (BAI). Phill Wilson (President of the BAI) presided. Co-awardees were Mo'Nique (actress/comedian who won Academy Award in 2009 for Acting in the film "Precious") and Jamar Rogers (entertainer formerly on The Voice). Red Carpet ceremony before the awards held at the Director's Guild of America on Sunset Boulevard. Jamal Rogers was a beautiful young man who was so thankful to me for "my saving his life by developing drugs for AIDS". He found out he was HIV infected (drug use in the South Bronx) a few years ago. He is a very popular entertainer with beautiful voice. All-around good time. Stayed at the old Hollywood hotel - Millennium Biltmore.
