Mar. 22, 2013 -- Attended unveiling of portrait of former Congressman Louis Stokes in Building 50. Lou was very warm and very happy to see me there. In his speech, he reminisced about the great things that I have done and how he learned so much from me over the years.

In context

A single line often inverts meaning once you see what it answers, so neighbouring messages are always shown.

Mar. 13, 2013 - Did nice interview at Biocentury (WUSA - Channel 29) on the Sequestration. That evening went to Research America Gala at Mellon Auditorium on 13th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W. I sat at the Duke University Table with Congressman George Holding, Victor Tzau, and others. My friend Diane Rehm (NPR Diane Rehm Show) received one of the awards.

Mar. 15, 2013 - Have received indications from Judith Shamir (Exec Sec of IOM) the Alan Leschner, Chair of IOM President Search Committee is very interested in my submitting my application for the job. I told her that I was not interested, but I would let her know. I called current President, Harvey Fineberg, and asked his opinion. He said that I would be fantastic for the job. I explained that I was not that interested. The only reason (weak) to take the job is that I could start writing my book in that job, which I cannot really do now since I would have so much more time in that much-less-demanding job compared to NIAID Director.

Mar. 18, 2013 - Met with Congressman Andy Harris (R-MD) in Building 1 together with Francis Collins, Griff Rogers, Gary Gibbons. Harris is a Tea Party person who is second rank on House Appropriations Subcommittee behind Chairman Kingston. Funny interchange since Harris brightened up when I introduced myself, saying that he was looking forward to meeting me since he went to Regis High School and was from Brooklyn. That really broke the ice. He is a physician (anesthesiologist) who favors NIH, but said that we would not get increases until Obama addresses the deficit by targeting

Mar. 23, 2013 -- Gave my annual GWIDS lecture at Suburban Hospital. Have doing this for over 20 years. Also, this evening went to the Children's Inn Black Tie Gala and auction. Chris and I bided for and got (for $900.00) a beautiful tile enclosed mirror made by the children of the Inn.

Mar. 26, 2013 -- Had what is becoming a "tradition" > dinner over my house with Harold Varmus and Eric Goosby. We used to include Gary Nabel, but he is gone to Boston with Sanofi. The tradition is that I cook pasta and either sausage or shrimp with great wines for the people (Harold, Eric, Gary) who are living in different cities from their wives. We spoke mostly about Eric's imminent stepping down from PEPFAR since he really wants to get back to San Francisco where his wife Nancy and his children are. He has done a magnificent job at PEPFAR and he should now do what makes him happy. Eric has become a dear friend.

Apr. 3, 2013 -- Went to NYC to deliver the Weill Cornell Medical College Global Health Lecture on "HIV/AIDS: A Look to the Future". Met with medical students after the talk and rushed back to DC on last USAirways flight (9:00 PM) to leave for SF the next morning at 6:45 AM.

April 4, 2013 -- flew to San Francisco to receive the UCSF Gold Medal along with Melinda Gates, Brian Druker (developed Gleevec), and Mary Ann Koda-Kimble (former Dean of UCSF School of Pharmacy). Gala affair at Pier 48 across the street from the new SF Giants Baseball stadium. I gave a 3 minute acceptance speech blasting the "sequestration" that many people said was eloquent and "courageous". I had flown to SF in the AM and took a taxi to Stanford to have lunch with Ali and buy her a birthday present at Lulu Lemon. Took CalTrain back to SF for the Gala. Ali is amazing -- straight A+ average.
