Feb. 15-16, 2011 - Went to San Juan to deliver the Opening Keynote at the NIAID/CDC/PAHO-sponsored Dengue Symposium. Great time. In accordance with my expanding to more emphasis on Global Health and Emerging Diseases.

Feb. 24-26, 2011 - Parents' Weekend at Stanford. Absolutely wonderful time to see Ali in her beautiful school setting. Spent prior night in SF with Chris at the Queen Anne's B & B and went to Jackson-Fillmore Restaurant. Days at Stanford were great. Saw women's basketball team clinch the PAC -10 championship for the 11th year in a row by defeating Oregon. Also, saw #1 ranking woman tennis player (Barte) and men's volleyball (ranked 4th in Nation).

Mar. 15, 2011 - White House communications people at it again. Last week (Mar. 11, 2011) a terrible tragedy hit Japan with a 9.0 scale earthquake in the NE part of the country almost immediately followed by perhaps the worst tsunami in recorded history of Japan destroyed much of the NE Coast. Importantly, it knocked out the cooling system of the Fukushima Daiichi Atomic Power Plant leading to multiple explosions and meltdowns with radiation spillage and leakage. As of today (4 days later) the extent of the potential disaster is still not known, i.e. how much radiation exposure will occur. Thus, we (NIH and me personally) are getting the expected calls from the press regarding the medical aspects of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) - what it is and how you treat it. The White House is not granting any clearances for me or anyone at this point to talk to the Press. Amazing!! Same as with the Pandemic Flu early on.

Mar. 21, 2011 - Was invited by the Bush family to a Kennedy Center event which was "The Points of Light Institute TRIBUTE - All together Now - A Celebration of Service". Bush 41 sent me a hand-written note thanking me for my meager $150.00 donation. At the event were Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Clinton gave an amazingly moving talk about his friendship and love of Bush 41. Entertainment was terrific: Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, Cee Lo Green, Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, among others. Brought back very fond memories of my interactions with Bush 41 as well as other Presidents during the past 30 plus years.

Mar. 29, 2011 - Appeared on the Colbert Report. Great success! Had a great time and received hundreds of e-mails and calls and personal mention of how good the performance was. Reason for the appearance was the approaching 30th anniversary of first cases of AIDS.
