Very interesting and very good paper on that darn furin cleavage site. Very cool. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.30.318311v1 Viruses without furin cleavage site = less transmission and less pathogenic (from other studies). Makes me believe the 'pre-circulation' hypothesis of a furin site-lacking virus in humans a little more (or other animals - maybe cat-like?). It then picks up that site - which is seen in other human coronaviruses - and boom. Pandemic. Interestingly, the exact site in SARS2 is observed in some of the FIP isolates, hence a potential connection tocat-like animals. Good thread summarizing some of the findings: https://twitter.com/influenzal/status/1311959153166954498?s=20[and of course - I want to know if they virus lacking the furin site can actually pick it up after repeated passage inculture on e.g., human lung cells... ]

Interestingly - I'm on a call with all the San Diego clinical labs at the moment. Everybody is like "WTF with those Tweets/timing last night given that the house is full of rapid tests...."
