# Transcript

**[2021-04-28T04:47:42] Robert F. Garry:** Atlantic article - could have been worse - at least no mention of GVP.

**[2021-04-28T04:52:24] Robert F. Garry:** Farming the mink, raccoon dogs, etc, etc, etc - so many opportunities for spillover. Follow the animals...

**[2021-04-28T05:02:36] Andrew Rambaut:** I agree, Kristian, with Pooh being involved in the transmissibility - have thought it from the beginning - too much of acoincidence that B.1.1.7 had a FCS mutation (back when it was very rare). Now with all the other 681 mutations coming up (and 677 possibly). Certainly looks like B.1.351 is not as transmissible as B.1.1.7 and probably not P.1 either - they have not invadedinto new areas in the same way. We are looking at whether the FCS mutations are cropping up / spreading inpopulations with moderate NPI (i.e., like the English November lock-down where schools were still open etc). Total lock down clearly works against B.1.1.7 as much as any and it is possible that no-NPI doesn't really…

**[2021-04-28T05:03:02] Robert F. Garry:** on  Billy aka Kevin - on to something? [shared file(s): image.png]

**[2021-04-28T05:05:05] Robert F. Garry:** PooH or PooR both bad - would be very surprised if both don't enhance cleavage R>H probably.

**[2021-04-28T06:02:51] Edward C. Holmes:** I was invited to that meeting. Bloody glad I didn't go.

**[2021-04-28T06:51:44] Andrew Rambaut:** Seen this one? Nelly, Pooh and Eek (plus a mutation at 144) https://github.com/cov-lineages/pango-designation/issues/57

**[2021-04-28T06:55:20] Andrew Rambaut:** 'neglected' - https://twitter.com/angie_rasmussen/status/1387397186372005893

**[2021-04-28T06:55:52] Andrew Rambaut:** Perhaps Sputnik V will just spread round the world of its own accord?

**[2021-04-28T06:56:25] Kristian G. Andersen:** Wait, what????

**[2021-04-28T07:00:05] Kristian G. Andersen:** @Andrew Rambaut - here's the B.1 lineage. A few in the US: https://outbreak.info/situation-reports?pango=B.1&am p;muts=S%3AN501Y&muts=S%3AE484K&mut[...]AR346K&muts=S%3AP681H&loc=USA&am p;loc=USA_US-CA&selected=Worldwide

Like Lassa N and several other RNA virus nucleoproteins there is a 2-domain structure. The N-term domain binds RNA. The C-term domain mediates dimerization. In btwn the two domains is…

**[2021-04-28T07:01:53] Andrew Rambaut:** @Kristian Andersen I think this one is interesting because it has almost nothing else other than Phil and Doug from before and then the 4 spike mutations

**[2021-04-28T07:02:18] Andrew Rambaut:** @Kristian Andersen It is like a really pure constellation.

**[2021-04-28T07:02:40] Kristian G. Andersen:** @Kristian Andersen Agreed. We have started seeing a lot of B.1, so we'll be on the lookout.

**[2021-04-28T07:04:04] Kristian G. Andersen:** That Sputnik V stuff is crazy AF. I wonder if the Ad26 is competent too? Ad5 is pretty prevalent, so while certainly aproblem, less so. Ad26 on the other hand...

**[2021-04-28T07:11:17] Robert F. Garry:** more grist for the anti-vaxxers and other opportunists

**[2021-04-28T07:32:33] Robert F. Garry:** "Perhaps Sputnik V will just spread round the world of its own accord?" NOT a bad idea - in an evil/not evil mad scientist kind of way.

**[2021-04-28T07:42:02] Andrew Rambaut:** Yeah - it is obviously one way of manufacturing vaccine.

**[2021-04-28T07:42:17] Kristian G. Andersen:** Might accelerate vaccination efforts in hard-to-reach areas... Good plan, Russia.

**[2021-04-28T07:43:09] Andrew Rambaut:** Do you think Russia are just going for the win on number of vaccinations?

**[2021-04-28T07:45:16] Kristian G. Andersen:** Clearly. It's going to be hard to track, although they could have created an epitope for MADE-IN-RUSSIA so we can keep tally via ELISA.
