# Transcript

**[2021-01-19T16:37:07] Edward C. Holmes:** At the very least it's a nice counter to the 'RaTG13 ain't real' bridgade.

**[2021-01-19T16:46:43] Edward C. Holmes:** Tommy is in for our post! Can someone give him access to the Google doc to edit? I doubt I have the skills to dothis. His email address is:

**[2021-01-19T17:05:39] Robert F. Garry:** Great! Will modify the figure. I think not a lot of changes to text are needed - will keep those minimal...

**[2021-01-19T17:34:42] Kristian G. Andersen:** Not a great day for confident immunologists. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.01.18.427166v1

**[2021-01-19T17:35:06] Kristian G. Andersen:** A little better. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.01.15.426911v1

**[2021-01-19T17:51:27] Edward C. Holmes:** Thanks Kristian, this is really doing wonders for my mental health.

**[2021-01-19T18:06:02] Kristian G. Andersen:** You live in Australia. No sympathy.

**[2021-01-19T18:14:35] Edward C. Holmes:** Fair point.

**[2021-01-19T18:20:36] Kristian G. Andersen:** Looking at that bat virus I'm honestly surprised we haven't all died of coronavirus infections already. Such a wild family. Interesting to see a partial 'human' RBD

**[2021-01-19T18:25:50] Edward C. Holmes:** I'm mainly looking forward to Alina and crowd trying to take it down

**[2021-01-19T18:32:47] Robert F. Garry:** All the building blocks are in bats. But, I'm with Eddie in thinking that Pangos have a couple of related Pango virus lineages they are carrying - that's despite Daszak and Alina musing that the pangos get infected after they arecaptured by humans or some other captured animal. The pango that get caught are the sick ones - just like the monkeys/apes with Ebola virus are sick and get captured. The third pango cov from China pretty much seals it forme.

**[2021-01-19T18:35:56] Edward C. Holmes:** Looking foward to Tommy's pango data...being sequenced now I think.

**[2021-01-19T18:36:40] Edward C. Holmes:** Weifeng has written this review paper and stuck my name on it. It contains the following paragraphs: "On June 11,2020, a COVID-19 resurgence was reported in Beijing after 56 consecutive days without confirmed local cases inBeijing. By mid-June, a total of 368 cases were confirmed and epidemiological investigation linked all the confirmed cases to the Xinfadi market, suggesting a single infection source. Genomic surveillance and epidemiological investigation identified the same SARS-CoV-2 virus from the frozen salmon internationally imported in the coldstorage which sold salmon to a booth in the Xinfadi market. This outbreak highlights that cold-chain food contamination may be responsible…

**[2021-01-19T18:37:00] Robert F. Garry:** Author list? Opt 1 - switch Eddie and Kristian and make Eddie corresponding. Opt 2 leave Eddie at second and make him co-first. Not sure where to put Tommy in either case.

**[2021-01-19T18:37:17] Edward C. Holmes:** "In addition, nucleic fragments of SARS-CoV-2 were also detected using PCR and sequencing approaches. For example, SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater in northern Italy using both nested RT-PCR targeting the ORF1ab region and real-rime RT-PCR targeting the RdRp region, and the earliest positive samples were dated back to December 18, 2020 in Milan and Turin [La Rosa G et al., Sci Total Environ]. Similarly, the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewatersamples was also reported using real-time RT-PCR targeting the N gene, with the archived sample collected inSpain on March 12, 2019 [Randazzo et al., Water research]. The SARS-CoV-2 RNA was also detected in a patientin France in December 2019 using two…

**[2021-01-19T18:37:55] Edward C. Holmes:** You should be corresponding Bob, but I don't mind going last (or 2nd).

**[2021-01-19T18:38:50] Edward C. Holmes:** Weifeng is clearly being told to tow the party line...I'm going to have to take my name off otherwise it will underminemy credibility. Thoughts?

**[2021-01-19T18:44:23] Kristian G. Andersen:** Yeah, clearly a party line here - which is pretty horrible. It's the fucking blame game from the US causing this. Let's make Eddie last

**[2021-01-19T18:44:53] Kristian G. Andersen:** And yeah - I'd take my name off it - language like this is going to raise eyebrows and I don't think you want to be partof that

**[2021-01-19T18:45:17] Edward C. Holmes:** Agreed, thanks. I'll use all the tact I can muster to get out of this. I might offer to edit the English but not be anauthor. What a fucking mess.

**[2021-01-19T18:49:55] Kristian G. Andersen:** Talking about a fucking mess - look at how Carl Z is quoting me in the NYT [shared file(s): Screen Shot 2021-01-19at 6.47.19 PM.png]

**[2021-01-19T18:50:08] Kristian G. Andersen:** Now, look at my full quote [shared file(s): Screen Shot 2021-01-19 at 6.47.52 PM.png]

**[2021-01-19T18:50:30] Kristian G. Andersen:** That is fucking bullshit - I trusted Carl to actual do a good job.

**[2021-01-19T18:50:38] Edward C. Holmes:** Bastard! Did you correct him??

**[2021-01-19T18:51:33] Kristian G. Andersen:** I didn't, but I'll push the whole quote - that's really disingenuous since it makes me sound as if I agree with these monkeys.

**[2021-01-19T18:57:05] Edward C. Holmes:** Totally! Bloody out of order.

**[2021-01-19T19:01:13] Kristian G. Andersen:** So unnecessary.

**[2021-01-19T19:06:56] Edward C. Holmes:** Untypical of Carl as well.

**[2021-01-19T19:12:12] Kristian G. Andersen:** Bad day at the office. :man-shrugging:

**[2021-01-19T19:17:27] Edward C. Holmes:** Journos just can't help telling the story they want
